Finally! After a month of being sick, life seems to be getting back to normal.
Alex started preschool this fall and absolutely loves it! They have a pet hamster the class named Mr. Nosey, and Alex talks about him constantly. He has also decided that he can no longer use the girls bathroom...so that has made trips without dad interesting ;) He is doing well, learning new songs, how to color in side of stuff instead of all over the place, tracing, letter and number recognition. They say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. His imagination has gotten better too and I love listening to his stories and to him playing. While I was cooking dinner, he was running around the table saying "I'm going so fast, I can't stop mommy!" and I asked what he was gonna do. He said "I'm gonna have to find my breaks..here they are mommy! EEEERRRRRR! I STOPPED MOMMY I STOPPED! The break was on my foot" He never ceases to make me laugh!
Carter has started going to MDO at the Baptist church on Mondays and Thursday, and he has done a complete turn around on clingy-ness. Yeah, he's still a momma's boy, but not an infuriating one anymore! He goes to the nursery ladies without crying and plays for 3 hours and absolutely loves it. When Alex and I go pick him up, he's nothing but smiles and it completely melts my heart! He just had his 15 month check-up and he's about 20.5 lbs. In the past year he has only gained about 5 pounds. He is an active boy, so it's understandable, but the doctor still wants me to bring him in for a weight check in November. He's not worried, he just wants to keep an eye on him. He loves playing peek-a-boo and wrestling with his 'Bubba'. He also likes waking me up to play at the butt-crack of dawn. I just pray that ends someday ;)
Yesterday the boys and I went to a chili cook-off downtown while Jason cleaned the garage out. I didn't realize how awesome this thing is! For 3 bucks I fed my entire family and got to taste test 20 chilies, some brisket, and some ribs...YUM! After that we headed to Hobart for their annual Pumpkin Palooza, where they featured Pumpkin Chuckin'. Unfortunately we arrived 2 1/2 hours before that began so we had to waste some time. I actually broke down and spent $3 for Alex to play in one of the bouncy slides. And as far as he is concerned, those were the best 5 minutes of his life:
We wasted more time painting a couple pumpkins, and eating lots of tasty food. I had a caramel/chocolate/white chocolate apple that was amazing :) Finally 4 pm comes, along with the rain, and the Pumpkin Chuckin begins:
I'll admit it, I was pretty impressed by it all ;) Alex though that it was the coolest thing he's ever seen. His favorite chucker was the big black one, of course. Carter could have cared less, and Jason was impressed by the 'Redneck game'.
It was so good to finally get out of the house and have some great family time! If you want to see more pics of the day, see the Oct 09 in my Facebook profile! I think most of you who follow me have a FB account now ;)

Goal Accompished, and new goal set!
I did it! I jogged 3 miles this morning, something I have never ever done! Even in high school I couldn't jog for more than a few minutes at a time. Not quite the 5k, but I know I can do it. It's hard to believe that I could barely run for 90 seconds just 2 1/2 months ago...and here I am going for 36 minutes!
Jogging has become my 'me' time, I used to hate it. But now I look forward to my running days because it helps wake me up and clear my mind. I just wish it wasn't so hot out! Good thing I've got a 3 week trip to ND coming up, just in time to cool off ;)
My new goal is to get up to jogging 7.5 miles because I am planning on participating in Spokane's annual Bloomsday run in May next year. The tricky part is that there is a lot of hills up there, and there aren't too many here. I'm going to have to go up to Quartz Mtn for training every now and then! I'm so excited and I hope this will help keep me motivated through the winter!

Running update!
Here I am about 2 months into my couch to 5k training, and I am beginning to LOVE it! I am up to running for 25 minutes straight, one run I got 2.3 miles in! I am getting there :)
I found a new podcast to listen to while running, and I am loving it! Songs I actually know and can sing along with: www.kissmyblackass.org Go check it out and start your own couch to 5k training! :)
I am also doing a couple of work out DVDs on my off running days, and they are kicking my behind! Jillian's 30 Day shred and Jillian's No More Trouble Zones ROCK!!
I have been seriously lacking in the actual diet department though. I'll get back there some day! I've gained a little weight back, but I am to the point where I am worrying more about my health and strength than I am about those pesky little numbers on the scale!
Anyway, hopefully in a month I can be up to running a 5k race! I am on the lookout for ones I can participate in :) I'll keep ya posted!

Last weight update for a while...
Hey all! Things have been crazy here for a little bit. I found out a couple weeks ago that my cat, Layla, had diabetes. We decided to put her down and it was pretty hard on me. I went off of my diet and ate out a lot, and I am struggling to get back on track. I've only gained back 2 pounds, so I am not doing that bad, but I think I need a break for a little while longer. I might start back up in the middle of June, not sure if I'll blog about it or not though.
I am, however, keeping up with my couch to 5k training and might blog about that every now and then. I am on week 3, and it's a tough one, but I'll make it through!
Some fun facts from where I started:
My blood pressure was usually 120/80, had it taken today and it was 98/60!
I have lost 7 inches off my waist
I have lost 6 inches off my hips
I have lost 3 inches off of each of my thighs
I have gone from a tight fitting 16 to a loose fitting 12
I still got about 14 pounds until my goal, but I feel pretty good about what I have accomplished in 5 months. I still plan on shedding those pounds eventually...and even though I never reached my goal, I am still going shopping at Grapevine Mills next week for my birthday :) One can never have too many clothes, right?!
Thanks for sticking with me on this journey!

Getting fit in '09 update #17
Hello! I am down 1 pound this week :) It's still coming off...even if it's a little slower than I'd like. I just keep trying to remind myself that these last 15 pounds are the hardest! I'm still doing the 'C25k' program, and I'm actually enjoying myself. I found a podcast to listen too while I'm running, making it much easier to do the running parts! You can find it here if interested. I have one more day of week 2 left, which will be done on Saturday, and Jason promised to tag along this time :)

Alex's Update
As you can see from the Alex-isms post, he is getting more and more understandable every day! It seems like he has turned into a little boy overnight. He is much more independent and decisive in his decision making. You should see some of the struggles we have just getting dressed in the morning...he's very specific in what he will wear. It's gotta be something cool..no wonder they don't make 'cute' boy stuff once they hit 2 years of age!

Alex-isms
He's at it again...here are a bunch to make you smile :)
*Half way through eating his pudding:
Alex: Mommy, I'm a mess!
Me (taking in all the chocolatey goodness spread all over his hands and face): Yes, yes you are
Alex (laughing): yeah..
*So, I have been telling him to shake of the little 'pains' he gets during the day instead of kissing each one. One day Alex is screaming at the top of his lungs:
Me: please stop, that hurts my ears!
Alex: AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH
Me: I cover my ears and frown
Alex: Shake it off Mommy!
Me: I shake my head
Alex: There, better, Mommy?
Me: yup, all better
*Alex brings me a nail and says "Handy Manny can fix it!"
*Whenever we introduce a new food or something he doesn't want to eat he says "I can't like it"
*Each time we go to the doctor's office (doesn't matter who it's for) He tells me "I'm all better now, Mommy"

Getting fit in '09 update #16
Hard to believe I am 16 weeks into this thing! Even harder to believe that I have pretty much stuck with it. I am only down .5 this week, but it was time for a break. I am happy to report that I have completed the first 2 runs for my couch to 5k program (C25k)! First one was super easy, but I pushed myself the second time (and I was pushing a double jogger) and it was much harder. I did manage to do a little over 2 miles in 29 minutes! My friend Bobbie and I (and possibly Jason too) are going to run a 5k when my training is done to celebrate my accomplishment! I am very excited!

Getting fit in '09 update #15
Sorry for the lateness! I am down 1.5 this week, which is very surprising. I've been kinda laying low, so all I gotta say is, thank God for nursing! haha I finally broke the 150 mark, so that makes me feel good. Plus I took out all the clothes I packed away early spring last year, and they all fit again, some are even too big! I've decided to take the plunge into running. I've been pretty adamant that I hate it, and I am pretty sure that I will hate it forever. But I need something that's a little easier to get into my schedule, since I can basically do it whenever. I am going to do the Couch to 5k program starting Monday. Wish me luck!

Getting fit in '09 update #14
I am down .5 this week...much more than I expected! It's been a rough week with eating. Alex has been sick off and on and it makes me too tired to make something healthy. Hopefully I can get back on track this week. I know I won't make my goal, but I am still hoping to get as close as I can!

Getting fit in '09 update #13
Well, I weighed-in yesterday instead of today because we went out to eat at Red Lobster for our 7 year anniversary and I really didn't want to face the scale this morning after all those biscuits and ranch ;) So I am happy to announce that yesterday I was down 1.5lbs. And this morning I got to go down another notch on my belt! When I started I couldn't even wear this belt, now I am 3 notches into it...that makes me feel so good!
This weeks weight: 151
Total weight loss so far: 20.5
Things I did this week: got sick with strep...yet again...and really didn't do anything else LOL
Things to do this week: Stay away from Alex's Easter goodies and drink more water!

Getting fit in '09 update #12
Sorry for the delay! I only lost .5 this week, but I'll take it, considering how terrible I ate this week! It was just bad, bad, bad! But this is a new week, and I WILL get back on track :)
Today's weight: 152.5
Total weight lost so far: 19lbs
Things I did this week: worked out once, ate really really bad
Things to do this week: continue working on the water in-take, and get back on track

Getting fit in '09 update #11
Yay! I'm down 2 pounds this week :) I weigh 153, for a total loss of 18.5 pounds! I've hit my first mini-goal, which was 10% of my starting weight. I am so happy I have stuck with it, even during the hard weeks when I gained for no apparent reason. I'm half-way there...18 down, 18 to go!
Things I did this week: Did pretty good at staying within my points, worked out once, took care of sick kids and a husband
Things to do this week: Work on water intake, I really suck at that.

Getting fit in '09 update #9
I am down 3lbs this week! I am at 155.5 (only 5.5 pounds away from pre-Carter weight!) I am totally shocked, as I didn't get to work out at all! But I ate pretty good. Having strep really sucked, but at least I still lost weight. Stay tuned for next week...it marks the half way point and I will be taking some comparison pictures! I am excited to see the changes. :)
Things I did this week: Nothing but recover
Things to do this week: Get back into the swing of things...start off small, so it's not so daunting!

Family updates!
It has been awhile since I posted updates on the family. So I'll start with the boys, because that's all you really want to hear about anyway, right? ;)
Alex is still loving going to 'school'. I am thinking about registering him for pre-school in the fall. He'd go 3 days a week from 8:30-11:30. He has been through potty-training and has done really really well! I can't believe how easy it was. He still is in a diaper at night, but I have a feeling that one is going to take awhile to master. He hasn't had an accident during the day in over a week! He still loves reading books, singing songs, and running around like a mad man, of course!
Carter turned 9 months old yesterday! Where has the time gone? He has mastered crawling and pulling up on everything. He can kind of wave, but I don't think he knows what he is doing yet. His favorite 'phrases' are baa-ba-baa and mama. He can even 'walk' with the use of his walker! (Video to come, eventually) He takes two naps a day, and has started sleeping 11 hours through the night before waking me up to nurse. He loves playing with his big brother, his face lights up every time he sees Alex. He eats 1-3 meals a day of baby food, his favorite is the apple/squash mixture. He loves to play the drums and dance around in circles with his mommy. He weighs 18.5 lbs and is 28" long (according to my own measurements...so they could be way off! LOL)
Jason is finally moving out of scheduling as the two KC-135 squadrons combine. Hopefully work won't be as bad for him, and we'll get to see him more often....even though he is taking two classes to work towards his Master's Degree! He is also thinking of going on a volunteer deployment come early fall so he can reenlist overseas to get the bonus tax free. Just pray that it's not one doing convoys!
As for me, I still have strep and just got a second round of antibiotics started yesterday. Hopefully this does the trick. I'm still right on track to losing 35 pounds by my birthday so I can go on a huge shopping trip in Grapevine, TX for new clothes!
I downloaded a bunch of pictures to our website http://www.ktnjasonsfamily.myphotoalbum.com/ please go check them out.

Getting fit in '09 update #8
Wohoo! I'm down another 2lbs this week! I weigh 158.5 as of this morning. I am now convinced that I need to take it easy on the high-intensity work outs and just focus on eating right while I am still nursing. I will probably try to squeeze one in a week just to keep my heart healthy, and I will do pilates so I can continue to tone those new muscles I am forming.
Things I did this week: Gave up coffee for lent and started drinking green tea (I think this probably helped a lot too), did one pilates workout, ate pretty well.
Things to do this week: Get in 3 pilates workouts, keep up on the water, and get one high-intensity workout in

Alex's Tales...
This boy can make me laugh with every new word and phrase he learns. Here is a conversation we had a couple days ago as Alex, Carter, and I are all sitting down eating our breakfast...
Alex: Oh my gosh, Mommy!
Me: What?! (as in, what did you just say? I didn't quite catch that..)
Alex: Oh my gosh, Mommy! Oh MY GOSH!
Me: What?! (as in, what's got you so worked up, and where the heck did you learn that? As I really don't say it that often)
Alex: Carter's sitting!
Me: Wow! Yes, that is amazing, isn't it?
Alex: yeah...
And he continues on with his breakfast like nothing ever happened. Seriously...this has got to be my favorite stage of life so far...

Getting fit in '09 update #7
Hey all! I weighed in at 160.5 this morning, and I am not sure if being sick helped out or not. 4 days of chicken noodle soup is not fun! But it is a 2 pound loss, so I'll take it. I'm probably not going to get back into workout mode this week so I need to be sure to stick to my points. I need to get over this awful cycle of gaining and losing before I go crazy!
Things I did this week: Absolutely nothing, got strep throat
Things to do this week: recover from being sick, ease back into some pilates, drink lots and lots of water

Getting fit in '09 update #6
Sorry it has taken me so long for an update. I gained pound this week and I really didn't want to blog about another up. It's really getting irritating! So this week I was 162.5
I'm beginning to think I am one of those nursing moms that can't work out and do weight watchers and lose weight. It's like I am already burning enough nursing. I worked out hard 4 times this week, and a couple pilates exercises, I even ate all those calories! I guess I should be happy it was only a pound. So this week I am only going to do pilates, no cardio and see if it makes a difference. I can't just quit all together now that I am starting to see some muscle definition (especially in my legs!) LOL
Things I did this week: worked out 6 times, avoided weighing in until Friday, stayed with in points (basically, I did everything right)
Things to do this week: LOSE WEIGHT! hahah....drink more water, get a few pilates in

Top 5 reasons why this was the best VDay!
no particular order...it was just an awesome day!
5. I can finally park in the garage again, thanks to Jason cleaning it out!
4. I got to sleep in
3. Jason cleaned the kitchen
2. Jason also made me a candlelit dinner, complete with flowers and wine
1. Alex didn't have a single potty accident all day, and he went poo-poo on the potty without any prompting by me!
This Valentine's Day will be at the top of the list for awhile!

Getting Fit in '09 update #5
I am down 3.5lbs this week (against my 'official' weigh-in from last week)! Taking me down to 161.5 for a total of 10 pounds!! I am averaging 2 pounds a week, so I am right on track to make goal by my birthday, just in time for my shopping adventure :)
Things I did this week: worked out twice, ate pretty good (but I can always improve on that!)
Things to do this week: work out (of course), get in plenty of water, and actually journal my food!

Getting Fit in '09 Update #4
Wow! #4 already? Where has the time gone?!
I am feeling a bit like a yo-yo. First week, down 5.5. Second week, up .5, Third week, down 3.5. And Fourth week, up 2! I did cheat and weighed myself this morning and I was back down 2 from yesterday...so apparently I am holding on to some water.
Things I did this week: Superbowl Sunday pig out (oops!), worked out once, stayed mostly within my points range
Things to do this week: Drink lots and lots and lots of water and stay as far away as I can from salty foods...oh and work out :)

High-Fructose Corn Syrup
This recently came to my attention by Mandi on a note she posted on facebook. I am pretty naive when it comes to processed foods and such that I eat and that I feed Alex, so this is scary to me! New studies have found that "almost half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient". (full article here )
Alex eats pancakes with a little bit of syrup every monrning for breakfast, and he has his favorite PB & J just about every day for lunch...both the syrup and jelly have HFCS. So I decided that I am going to be a little more selective on what I give him and read labels carefully. I even made home-made pancake syrup yesterday right after I read the article, and bought some simply fruit spread for his PB&J. Maybe I'll start making my own jam too...it's probably cheaper anyway!
Does anyone have any good syrup and jam recipes? Please share them with me!

Getting Fit in '09 update #3
I lost 3.5 pounds this week! Current weight is 163lbs, I even feel lighter this morning!
The frustrating thing is that I only got 1 work out in this week. So what the heck does that mean? Do I need to eat more on the days I work out? Do I need to eat less? I don't want to stop working out, as I need to get tone and in shape as well as lose the weight (obviously!). So I will try to squeeze more excersize in this week and eat more on those days. I really want one of those cool watches that track your heart rate and calories burned...it would make it so much easier!
Things I did: Stayed within my points, wohoo!! Worked out once
Things to do: Keep on track with points. Get more than one workout in, and make sure I eat those points!

Getting Fit in '09 update #2
Week 2 weight: 166.5
So that is a gain of .5! A little disappointing, but 5lbs in two weeks is still a great number. It's my fault though, I know exactly what I did wrong. No more parties with pepperoni calzones, margaritas, and beer! It was only one night and I didn't think it would do any harm. It never did when I was doing WW in 2007, but apparently your body isn't as forgiving after a second child!
Things I did this week: Had one bad night, weighed in every day (bad I know, but if I hadn't I wouldn't have worked so hard to get rid of it), worked out 3 times (elliptical 45 minutes, 45 minutes pilates, and 45 minutes of spin)
Things to do this week: only eat a few of my weekly flex points a day (not all of them and then some!), continue to be a rock star in workouts, and only weigh myself on Thursdays :)

Alex's new silly phrase
Last week Alex started answering every request with "Yes, Sir!" and that includes saying it to me. I try to correct him to say 'yes mommy' or 'yes, ma'am', but it doesn't really work.
Jason and I were trying to figure out where in the world he learned such polite manners...and then it clicked one night when we were reading one of his favorite books:
"Please, sir. I don't like this trick, sir.
My tongue isn't quick or slick, sir.
I get all those ticks and clocks, sir,
mixed up with the chicks and tocks, sir.
I can't do it, Mr. Fox, sir. I'm so sorry, Mr. Knox, sir."
It doesn't say 'yes, sir' anywhere in Fox in Socks...but this has to be where he learned it. So, thank you, Dr. Seuss, for helping teach my boy manners ;)

Getting Fit in '09 update #1
Hello! Thank you to all who commented on This is it! What great motivation...I can't and I refuse to let any of you down now!
My first weigh-in was awesome! I am down 5.5 pounds in one week, making me 166lbs. That is too much for a nursing mom, but since it is the first week, I think I can let it slide. They say not to lose more than a pound while nursing, but I safely lost 2lbs per week while nursing Alex and never noticed a drop in my supply.
Things I did this week: Stayed within my points range all but 2 days...darn pizza and desserts will get me every time; worked out 3 days
Things to do this week: Keep within my points; give it my all in every workout (I want to be sore the next day...yup, I am that crazy)

Carter-pillar
I know many have asked to see a video of Carter doing his inch-worm crawl...so I finally did it, and it only took 6 tries! haha...not bad, eh?
And another one just because Alex is so cute in it, and Carter much prefers him over me:

Amazing Family
This family is one that both Jason and I hope to be some day. They are amazing and motivating in their faith and love in God. I just wanted to share a song they sang in our church (Altus Christian Fellowship) on Sunday morning. I just love seeing how they devote every single aspect of their life to serving Christ. So thank you for being an ispiration!

This is it!
There is no going back now. I went on a diet (weight watchers) and an excersize plan ( You've Gotta Start Somewhere!! ) last Thursday and I am determined to get down to my goal weight by my birthday. I am laying it all out here to keep myself accountable. I figure, if y'all know, then y'all will keep bugging me about it, right?
So I started at 171.5 (yikes!) and I hope to be at 135 by May 28th so that Memorial Day weekend we can spend the night down in Grapevine Mills shopping for my new wardrobe :) Oh, and Jason will get to go golfing too...it's part of the bargain LOL I'll weigh in on Thursday's or Friday's depending on my mood and post updates for you.

On a lighter note
Carter turned 7 months on Friday! He is getting more daring, and I am starting to put him in some of Alex's 12 month clothing already..yikes! He has begun pulling himself up on stuff...he's not very good yet and falls a lot, but it's still pretty entertaining :)

In case you were wondering...
I figured out how to get desitin cream out of fabric...would you care to know?
1. Leave the desitin cream in your toddlers room overnight (good job, daddy!).
2. Find your toddler cowering in the closet at 7:30am covered, once again, head to toe in desitin.
3. Make daddy wash the whiney toddler while you get all the sheets, blankets, and pillowcases off the bed
4. Put each into the sink (or bathtub in my case) and get wet. Squirt dishwashing soap directly to affected areas and scrub away.
Finally, spray the affected areas with Shout and wash in the washing machine...Hot/Cold, Heavy Duty, Heavily Soiled, Pre-Soak, and Extra Rinse.
You can still see some spots, but at least it no longer smells like Desitin.
Lesson Learned? Probably not...I am really beginning to despise Desitin...

Can't complain!
I think January is the only month around here that I don't complain about the weather. Maybe because my family in Grand Forks has to warm up their cars for at least 30 mintues before driving (a good 45 if you want it to be luke warm inside) while we get to go to the park today and take our jackets off! Carter, Alex, and their friend Madison had a blast at the new park we tried out this afternoon...I think it's going to become our new hangout. Carter loves the swing...giggled practically the entire time!
